Guess Who Came to Visit Us?

Welcome to The Brenham House!
I had the most exciting visit today from a beautiful woman, and her precious family, who actually grew up in our home!  I was nervous because I wanted her to like the house, but I knew there had been many changes over the years.
She was able to share, with her boys, some of the stories of her childhood and now they would better understand what she was describing.
I got to ask a lot of questions about the house!
They were in Texas for her mother's 88th birthday.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Vinas!
I hope you all can smell the cookies baking!

My Grandmother, fondly known as Kate

This is my father's mother, my grandmother, Ruby Kate Rhode and her pet deer!
This picture was on a post card.
She was born and reared in Iota, Louisiana.  The family moved to Beaumont, Texas after she graduated high school, in 1919.  Someone burnt down her father's two general stores and that is why they moved to Texas.

1800's Gas Parlor Chandelier at The Brenham House

This is the chandelier in the stairwell at The Brenham House!

It is a lovely fixture that dates back to the late 1800's.
It is a Victorian Parlor gas chandelier that burned kerosene.   The kerosene was stored in the brass base of the lamp.  It has a chimney and at the top is a smoke bell of opal glass used to snuff out the lamp.
It has an opal glass domed shade and crystals to refract the light.  It has been electrically wired and is such a reminder of our history.
