Count Your Blessings Southern Style

Southern Traditions

Count Your Blessings

Table blessings of thanksgivings are what defines the
spiritual South.  There is a comfort in the way certain
phrases are used each time the family gathers
around the table for a shared meal.
Some blessings offer thanks to God
and others ask for blessings from God.  Either way, the blessing of food is part of a ritual which connects the family members.  This tradition is then handed down to the next generation.

There is no right or wrong way to say grace.  Almost everyone has said or heard these words, "Bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies and our bodies to Your service".

This is a time to remember those who have passed on before us,
Give thanks for the food,
for our health,
for those who prepared the food,
and for every member of our family.
Amen

Fall is in the air....
time to break out the recipes that remind us
of the Fall Season.  We served this this morning at The Brenham House for dessert.
This recipe is a great change from your pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving
Pumpkin Surprise
Given to me by a friend from church Debi Meschwitz
1 (15 oz) can pumpkin
3 eggs
1c. sugar
1 (8 oz) can evaporated milk
4 tsp. pumpkin spice
1 yellow cake mix
1/2 c butter, melted
1 1/2 c. chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix together the pumpkin, eggs, sugar, milk, and spices.  Pour into a greased 9x13 baking dish.  Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the pumpkin mixture.  Drizzle the melted butter ad sprinkle with the pecans.  Bake for one hour.
I make a homemade caramel sauce to serve with it.

China Cabinet in The Brenham House

This is the lovely china cabinet that was built in our dining room,
at The Brenham House.
Originally there was a double sided fireplace that faced the dining room and the kitchen.  After the great invention of gas heating, came about, it was installed in the house and both fireplaces, in the home, were closed off.  Beautiful china cabinets were built in their place.
At that time if you had gas in your house you had arrived!
Now, everyone wants fireplaces!

So Many Miles of Shopping!

A plan of attack is important during Round Top Antique Festival.  There are miles and miles of shopping.
1.  Groups need to wear bright clothing so they can be spotted from the crowd
2.  Walking shoes
3.  Comfortable clothing for the trip
4.  Hat and sunglasses
5.  Drive in a vehicle that can accommodate the items you find
6.  Cell phones need to be charged
7.  Lots of cash ( some vendors don't take credit cards)
8.  Might make a better deal if they don't have to pay for running the credit card.  Some fees are high and you might just get that off the cost with cash.
9.  Always ask what their best price is.
10.  Carry water with you and scout places to eat ahead of time and don't wait to try t eat at the prime times.  Go early or later.
11.  Pull carts can come in handy for smalls that you pick up along the way!
BOOK EARLY FOR THE BEST ROOMS!
