Brenham House Sugar Cookies

I have emailed this recipe out to many of my guests recently so here it is:

I use an old fashioned vanilla cookie dough.   I don't like to use food color, so I use a butter frosting, with almond extract and fresh strawberries for color and taste.

Brenham House Sugar Cookie
4 c. flour, 1 tsp. baking powder (aluminum free), 1/4 tsp. sea salt, 1 c. butter, 1- 1/2 c. sugar, 2 eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla
___________________________________________
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Sift flour, soda, & salt together and set aside.  Cream butter & sugar until fluffy.  Add eggs & vanilla beating thoroughly.  Stir in the dry ingredients slowly.  Chill dough in refrigerator.
Roll out dough 1/4 inches thick and cut out cookies with a cutter.  Place on a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Bake for 10-12 minutes of until done.

Fresh Strawberry Butter Icing
2 T. butter, softened, 4 c. powdered sugar, 3 T. half & half, 1 tsp. almond extract, about 2 large
strawberries cut up very small dice.
___________________________________________
Mix the butter and sugar together and then add the strawberries to see how moist they are and how pink your icing turns.  Add the cream, and extract accordingly.

I make these cookies throughout the year.
During this Valentine season I make them
 in the shape of hearts,
and everyone seems to really enjoy them!

Winter Camellias at The Brenham House

Looking out the dining room window at The Brenham House.
You can help but feel happy.
Camellias make us smile in the winter when most of the plants are sleeping, waiting for the spring. Camellias are as southern as pecan pie!
I smile because I remember spending time with my grandfather who loved Camellias.  He grafted Camellias and showed them at the
Beaumont Garden Club.

History of The Brenham House at 705 Clinton Street

This is the cornerstone of the first Lutheran Church of Brenham.
German was spoken in the services until the 1900's.
It was located in the 700 block of Clinton Street.
Destroyed during the Great storm of 1900 that hit Galveston, Texas.
Rebuilt on the same foundation, but 5 years later the church relocated to Third Street and is now St. Paul's Evangelical Church, Brenham, Texas.
The Brenham House was built in the 1920's on the same foundation in the same cruciform shape, only it was now a home.  The land was subdivided and the old church became 705 Clinton Street.
In 1989 the home was DBA- The Brenham House Bed and Breakfast.

Brunch at The Brenham House

Broiled Grapefruit

The first time I had broiled grapefruit I was in New Orleans.  It is a very simple recipe and it is so good this time of year!
Cut and section the grapefruits.
 Place in a baking dish.
Place pats of butter on top.
Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together.
Turn oven on high broil.
Then top the grapefruit with the sugar mixture.
Place in oven and broil for 5-8 minutes.
