White Picket Fences in Brenham, Texas

White Picket Fences are found all throughout Brenham, Texas.

Picket fences have been popular since colonial times right up to today.
Usually made out of wood and painted white.
The white tint painted on the fence is usually the same white trim used, on the home.  If the home is pure white, so are the pickets.
If the trim on the house is a tinted white color, then that is the color used on the fence.

The design of the picket is usually determined by the slant of the roof on the house.
Victorian homes are usually more ornate.
For very pointed roofs the pickets are pointed.

Less steep pointed homes may use a dog-eared picket.

Throughout Brenham you will see all types of picket fences!

Unity Theratre's Nixon's Nixon

Unity Theatre in Brenham, Texas
presents

Studio Series
a political satire by Russell Lees
Nixon's Nixon
October 25- November 4, 2012

On the night before President Nixon is to announce his resignation
he summons Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to the Lincoln Sitting Room.
These two larger than life characters wrestle with the history as they try to manipulate each other, reenact scenes of their political triumphs
and ultimately,
devise a dizzying and doomed plot to keep Nixon in office.

Unique Elegance of Cottage Gardens at The Brenham House

Unique Elegance of Cottage Gardens

Cottage gardens are informal gardens with dense plantings that are highly individualistic.  English in origin the cottage gardens use grace and charm rather than formal structure.  Many times there is a rose-bowered arbor entrance. These gardens give the homes such romantic appeal.

The Brenham House uses old-fashioned plants and varieties such as antique roses, native plants, herbs, and self-sowing perennials
which come back year after year.

As the years go by cottage gardens become very dense.
These gardens surround The Brenham House.

Porte Couteaux

Many of our guests ask about our knife rests that we use at The Brenham House.
Porte couteau is French for knife rest.
Porte couteaux of French for knife rests.

They were created in the late 17 or 18th century.
They were invented to save the knife, fork, and tablecloth from being stained.
Later in the Victorian age the knife rests were made in sets.

Americans today collect different ones to make the table setting interesting.
They are often made of crystal, gold, silver, mother of pearl, and ivory.  You may have seen them while out antique shopping and never knew what they were!
Very handy to save your knife for a second course and to keep the table cloth from being stained!  Great Idea!
